Getting there
The main means of visiting Pemba Island are by light aircraft charter or schedule flight. There is also a ferry service, but this is not always reliable. The only airport is Chake Chake in the centre of the Island, and the main port used by the ferry service is Mkoani in the south-west. After arriving at the airport there is a short vehicle ride to Wesha Port on a newly built bitumen road which takes approximately 20 minutes. A private speedboat will then transfer you from Wesha Port to Fundu Lagoon (20-25 minutes). There is no useable road access.
The best weather is between December and March and again from July to early November, with the optimum months being July through to September.
Diving and Activities
Fundu Lagoon is a PADI 5 Star Gold Palm Resort with its own fully equipped dive centre. A full range of PADI courses are offered, and the surrounding dive sites are world class.
The lodge offers a fleet of boats to cater for hotel guests. Included in the rates are trips to nearby Mesali Island with a pristine beach and superb snorkelling and diving. Dhow sunset cruises and canoe safaris through the mangroves are also available.
